Mini-Grants Available-Deadline September 13, 2011
The WNYSLC, in partnership with the John R. Oishei Foundation, announces a funding opportunity for community projects that engage college students in service-learning opportunities. The available funding will provide seed money to new projects that are collaborative in nature and engage at least one WNYSLC higher education institution and at least one WNYSLC community partner. Projects that engage students from two or more higher education institutions are strongly encouraged and will be given priority. Grants in the amount of $500 to $1,500 will be available. Grants may be used in academic year 2011 – 2012.

The WNYSLC will host “Building Cultural Capacity,” a webinar broadcast, on 2/1/11 from 2-3:30 p.m. at Buffalo State College. This webinar, sponsored by Minnesota and Iowa Campus Compacts, will explore the attitudes, knowledge and skills needed to work effectively with diverse cultural groups. There is no cost to attend . RSVP to eoman@daemen.edu by January 26, 2011. Parking information and passes will be sent out to those who register.

10/29/10. The 3rd Annual WNYSLC Service-Learning Conference “Harvesting the Benefits of Service-Learning,” will take place Friday, October 29, 2010 at Canisius College.

Information and Online Registration

“Service-Learning in Online Courses: Opportunities and Challenges,” the first in a series of webinars hosted by Minnesota Campus Compact and Iowa Campus Compact, will be held Wednesday, January 19, 2011 from 12-1 p.m. This webinar will explore how faculty are currently implementing service-learning in online courses, what types of service online students are engaging in, and the opportunities that are available through online service-learning. The WNYSLC will be broadcasting this webinar at Daemen College in the Wick Center in the Executive Board Room for free for WNYSLC members. Please call 839-8375 or email eoman@daemen.edu by January 13, 2011 if you would like to attend.

Mini-grant awardess announced. Congratulations to the following faculty and community partners who received WNYSLC mini grants for 2010-2011 projects! Sharlene Buszka (Daemen College) in partnership with Literacy Volunteers of Buffalo & Erie County, Jericho Road Ministries in partnership with Lynn Velasquez (Trocaire College), Angela Thering (D’Youville College) in partnership with the International Preparatory School at Grover, and Buffalo State College in partnership with Journey’s End Refugee Services. We look forward to hearing about their service-learning successes!
